“We believe that as each child is
empowered, communities will be transformed
and these communities will transform the nations.”
These children may not have much food, running water or things that we would deem to be essentials, but when I asked what they thought constituted a good life the response practically every time was 1) God 2) Love 3) Respect.
The future of Backdoor, and South Africa, lies with these children. My first trip to South Africa changed my life - starting with my heart.I was truly broken for the nation, and partiularly the underprivileged children. I could see through the poverty to their passion and potential... and also the doors of opportunity that just need opening. I truly believe that every child should have the same opportunities I have been blessed with - physically, spiritually and educationally. During my research I came to realise that these kids don't want our charity - they want empowering. They want to be the difference in their families, communities and nations. They want people. They want people to teach them. They want people to encourage them. They want people to empower them. They want people to love them.
More specifically they told me they want education. The education system in South Africa still suffers dreadfully from the apartheid regime. Schooling is not free and unfortunately the quality of education in the townships leaves much to be desired. Last year the teachers went on strike for 2 months & only 4 out of a class of 45 passed their final exams this year. I believe one of the main problems is a lack of resources and help available to the kids outside of school. And that is where an education resource centre comes in.

It was my dream and vision to establish an education centre in Backdoor to provide the kids who want to learn with somewhere to study and the resources and assistance they need to succeed.  This dream is now a reality!!! I can only but thank the Lord for his incredible provision and faithfulness as the education centre in Backdoor is almost complete. The 'Jabulile Pre-School is already up and running with 2 amazing local teachers & the further 2 classrooms (resource room & compuer room) will be soon be changing lives too.

If you, or anyone you know, could help with providing educational books, CD ROMs, DVDs, computers, teaching materials or volunteers I would love to hear from you!!
