Water is a huuuuuge issue in Backdoor. It is controlled by local chiefs... and recently they have only been turning the water on once in the past year! Those of us fortunate enough to have a tank can manage on that for a few weeks... but we are certainly in the minority. Most people have to fill up whatever containers they can when the water is turned on & then try to make do with what they have for as long as they can. After 2-3 weeks it's a common sight to see people carrying heavy water containers from the rivers or waiting hopefully by the road for a tanker to pass by.
The ironic thing is that in this current rainy season I can collect hundreds of litres from bath tubs and containers in one short down pour. Yet the next day people will still be waiting by the road for water. We belive one way we can make a difference in this community is to provide guttering and containers for local houses in order to ease the water problems... all for less than £50 per household!
